Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, Incorporated (GBLA) is located in Bakersfield, California and offers free legal services in civil matters to eligible low-income persons residing within our service area in Kern County.

Eligibility

To be eligible for services, individuals must reside in Kern County, meet income and asset guidelines, and present a legal problem within the GBLA core areas of practice.

Delivery System

Services are initially accessed through GBLA’s Legal Telephone Counseling System Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding major holidays. Residents of Greater Bakersfield, Arvin and Lamont should call (661) 325-5943. Residents of communities outside the greater Bakersfield area may call toll free (888) 292-GBLA.

By utilizing the telephone counseling system, our personnel can screen your matter for eligibility, provide brief counsel and advice, and make appropriate referrals, without your needing to leave home or work for an initial consultation. Eligible clients with more complex legal matters are then referred to a staff attorney or hearing paralegal for further assistance and representation.
